OPOTIKI kids showed yesterday that sometimes being a superhero means championing a healthy mode of transport.
The town’s first Superheroes on Bikes Day was held at Memorial Park, organised by Sport Bay of Plenty primary school sport director Exia Edwards.
With several parents and youngsters soaking up the sun and getting in on the fun, kids enjoyed races and games over the afternoon.
Parent Georgia Rush said she was enjoying the event, as was her youngster Aaron Williams.
“It’s awesome, I didn’t even know this [pump track] was here,” she said.
Ms Rush said her boy was loving it and they would likely come down again in their own time to try the track again.
The event encouraged kids aged under five to get on their bikes dressed as their favourite superhero and falls in with Sport BOP’s Bike Month events.
“I thought it would be a cool little event to get the little ones out on their bikes,” Ms Edwards said.
Children made the most of the pump track for the event and the various other activities organised.
Ms Edwards said in recent years the previous under 5’s initiative “Tikes on Trikes” had not been run.
Wanting to put on something for youngsters, she came up with this event on a whim.
“It’s just a bit of fun with superheroes,” she said.
Ms Edwards said the superhero aspect was to give the kids a little extra fun, and an excuse to dress up.
Tomorrow, Sport BOP will be pushing the initiative for cycling further, with a pit stop for cyclists set up at Opotiki Bluemoon Foursquare.
