HORIZON Energy is planning to install Whakatane’s first electric-vehicle charging station near Otuawhaaki, the visitor information centre, in Quay Street.

Horizon network general manager Derek Caudwell said advances in electric vehicle technology meant the lifecycle costs of electric, or plug-in hybrid, vehicles had reduced significantly, and it was expected their use would grow dramatically in years to come.

“We see the new charging station as not only putting Whakatane on the New Zealand electric vehicle map but promoting the use of electric vehicles, which benefits the environment, and encouraging those with electric vehicles to visit the district.”

A site had been identified in consultation with Whakatane District Council outside the information centre that offered good access to the public and shopping and entertainment while charging took place, as well as ease of connection to the existing power supply.

Mr Caudwell said electric vehicles produced 80 percent less carbon dioxide emissions than fossil-fuel powered vehicles, and offered considerable running cost savings.
