A DOG has been euthanised in Kawerau after attacking a person.

The matter was raised in a report to the Kawerau District Council’s regulatory and services committee meeting on Tuesday.

The dog was surrendered by the owner following the attack and was euthanised.

Councillor David Sparks asked if any further action, such as the laying of charges, had been taken.

Manager planning, compliance and capability Chris Jensen said no further action was taken.

“Our general approach is, if they do the right thing following, then we leave it at that,” he said.

Animal control staff are continuing to work during the Covid-19 lockdown and health and safety protocols have been put in place for the intake of dogs into the pound.

Staff have been reducing all non-essential shelter intakes and are prioritising shelter only for animals who are in immediate danger or pose a significant public safety risk.

Additional dog and stock food have been purchased and staff have been preparing for pet owners that may need assistance with the care of their animals during lockdown, for example if they were hospitalised.

Council has also hired a decontamination shower for the pound for dog rangers to use.
