I READ with astonishment the decision not to proceed with the proposed retirement village in the campground off McGarvey Road.
Surely this is the most brainless decision made by someone that has no concept of the requisites of the older generation.
My point is that a lot of us have come into town from the rural areas, Ohope and Coastlands, so as to be closer to amenities.
One only has to look in other areas where these sorts of villages are located in respect to amenities to see which ones are successful, or take a long time to fill.
The reasoning of the area being used for possible tourist camping is also another brainless decision as if one looks, here and overseas, at successful camping grounds with high occupancy rates, they are all situated away from the town centres. This would be ideal as part of the new proposed Piripai site having access to sea and river, same as in other areas.
I can only surmise that the same logic has been applied to this as was a case where a subdivision in town was held up for a week because the stormwater soak pits held more water than stated in the consent application.
Once it was pointed out that you measure the inside of the soak rings, not the outside, the volumes were found to be correct.
I would have thought holding more water would have been a bonus not an issue to hold works up.
This may be an ideal time for us all to think seriously about how we vote in the upcoming elections to see if we can get a bit of common sense in how this area develops as it has so much going for it. At present it is being totally stifled by bureaucracy gone mad.
