Teams slog it out in the mud

EASTERN Bay teams were in good form at the New Zealand Maori Rugby League tournament in Ngaruawahia at the weekend.

The 52-team tournament was played in wet, muddy conditions and nine Eastern Bay teams took part.

The Mataatua Saddlebacks had teams in the under-10, under-11, under-12 and under-13 grades.

The Putauaki Stags played in the under-11 and under-13 grades.

Tuhoe were represented by under-11 and under-14 boys teams as well as an under-15 girls team.

Four Tuhoe players made the under-15 girls tournament team - Puhikura Teka, Te Aomihi Paul, Huhana Nicholas and Limiah Enoka.

Toko Waaka was named as team manager also.

Tuhoe’s Nephi Sanerive, Shyne Toheriri Wirihana-Winiata and Kaia Cole were named in the under-14 tournament team.

Putauaki’s Tipene Ransfield and Tuhoe’s Charnze Enoka made the under-11 tournament team.

Mataatua’s Deighton Collier made the under-10 tournament team. Tuhoe also won the best haka competition.

Apart from the weather Eastern Bay managers said it was a good weekend of league for the young players.
