OUR modern world is struggling. All sorts of issues are wallowing at odds with the rules and boundaries that used to serve us well.
I am allowed to say this. I am older and I see things. The dying of decency is one of them. Sad.
Decency is sliding out from under us and is careering down a slippery, icy slope toward a large black shadow in the middle of an icepack that’s thousands of miles from where it should be and will be decorated with polar bears, thin and anxious and slowly starving to death because the pack cliffs are too high to negotiate and it’s too far to swim home due to global warming.
As you see, I am just as capable as others in going off on a written justifiable tangent.
I will not give my opinion regarding the approaching destruction of our planet. There’s an emotional issue closer to me and it rattles me.
I know a small group of people who protect me and literally have my life in their hands when I have reason to see them. They will be biggish guys, as the job demands, they have lovely personalities, as the job demands, they are always tidy, pleasant looking and smile at one’s approach.
They need eyes in the backs of their heads, scanning all directions, and will be trained to suss out that one person who approaches that needs to be stopped and evaluated before entering the building. They do this work for hours a day, standing.
For heaven’s sake give the girls and guys doing security at Work and Income a chair, or stool, a sawhorse, anything.
The doctors they see will worry for them regarding long-term back problems, aching legs, sore feet, frozen smile problem, owing to obeying rules associated with the archaic “keeping up appearances” logic. It’s is ridiculous and harmful.
For their efforts at the front line in this day and age of emotional turmoil and financial discrepancy they won’t be getting paid anywhere near the amount they deserve.
Give them an ovation and a chair. A tall, chrome-legged one, with a soft top. It could be claimed by Work and Income back to their own
Government department as a back-up weapon and a decent thing to do.
