THERE are three new exhibitions opening at Te Koputu later this month, including Frank & Molly.

Showing in the Opus Gallery until November 20, this revealing exhibition focuses on the paintings of Wellington-born artist Molly Morpeth Canaday (1903-1971), whose name has become synonymous with art awards in Whakatane.

At the age of 29 Molly moved to America for love and to marry Frank Canaday.

In America Molly furthered her art practise studying with émigré artist Israel Abramofsky and Austrian artist Joseph Floch (1895-1977).

This exhibition tracks her development from her early period where pattern and colour are explored through the pleasures of the everyday, to her later abstraction paintings influenced by heady 1950’s New

York and the development of Abstract Expressionism.

On show at the same time is the Society of Arts & Crafts Visual Expressions exhibition (Sheaf Family Gallery) and the Birds-a-Plenty exhibition (Whakatane Community Board Gallery).
