UPDATE: 2.30pm - A mother and her two-year-old daughter are in a stable condition after they were hit by a SUV yesterday. However, her 11-month-old son remains in a critical condition in Starship Hospital.

The 33-year-old woman was walking along Otamarakau Valley Road with her two children when she was struck by the vehicle, which was towing a trailer.

Pukehina Volunteer Fire Brigade chief officer Errol Watts, who attended the scene, said the crew was called at 2.30pm and were the first emergency service to arrive.

“When we arrived there were a few people there, there was a woman stretched out on the ground and a push chair that was smashed up.

“There was a group of people holding a couple children.

The crew assessed the patients and because the children weren’t particularly responsive they worked on stabilising them and called rescue helicopters.

11am - THE Otamarakau community is reeling after a mother and her two babies were hit by a car yesterday afternoon.

The SUV had been towing a trailer and collided with a woman pushing two young children in a stroller just before 2:30pm. A farmer manager, who did not want to give his name, told the Beacon that it was a sensitive time at the moment.

He said two of his workers were off today after helping to pick up one of the children off the road following the accident. It is understood that the woman, her children and the driver were from the Otamarakau area.

While investigations are still continuing, police believe fatigue may have been a contributing factor to the crash.
